Characterful single-vineyard cuvée from Coteaux du Giennois

In the 1880s, phylloxera spread through the vineyards of the Loire. To save the vines, American rootstocks were imported - they passed through Chicago and were stamped there. As a tribute to these "saviors," the winemakers named the plot after the city: Chicago. Today, Domaine de Villargeau produces a characterful red wine from 48-year-old vines on clay-limestone soil.

Grapes & Vinification

The blend consists of Gamay (80%) and Pinot Noir (20%), sourced from the chalky clay soil of Coteaux du Giennois. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented as whole bunches at a low temperature for 10 days, with pigeage. After pressing, the wine matures for 6 months in tanks. The result is a smooth, fruity red wine with notes of raspberry, cherry candy, and soft tannins.

Estate information:
The successors of many generations of winemakers, two brothers named Jean-Fernand and François, decided in 1991 to clear old plots and plant only Sauvignon. This grape thrives on the chalky flint soil of Giennois. Over the years, the estate not only grew but also saw the planting of Gamay and Pinot Noir. Along with Sauvignon, these are the three grape varieties permitted in Coteaux du Giennois.

The two brothers, who founded the Villargeau vineyard, are now taking a step back but remain involved in daily activities and the direction of the business. After all, they are the history of Villargeau. The current management is in the hands of Marc, Yves, and Christophe.
